Alnmouth’s up and down start to the season took a turn for the better during an entertaining cup tie against table topping Gateshead FC’s development squad as they more than held their own to eventually progress to the third round as a result of a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Struggling to find the net of late, the Seasiders were off to the perfect start as debutant Dom Schiavetta slotted home expertly inside the near post after being played through by Jonny Quinn.

The solid home formation dealt with the visitor’s pressure until the last kick of the half when Cameron Fenton found space to level with a half volley following a corner.

The home lead was restored on seventy minutes when Michael Brown broke through the middle before laying off to Andy Murray who beat the ‘keeper from the edge of the area with a low drive, however the advantage lasted barely a minute as the students replied at the other end with Joe Robson’s diving header.

Sam Bell between the Gateshead posts played a major part in the requirement for extra time as he spectacularly denied Andy Murray deep into stoppage time and then did likewise at the end of extra time to set up penalties as man of the match Jorden Frost’s goal line effort was blocked.

The protracted shoot out ended when on the brink of elimination, Mick Ashurst won the plaudits when saving three of the last four kicks to put his side through.
