Adjustments to CCTV to cover the hot-spots

Linking the cameras at the bus station into Alnwick's new CCTV system could be done next month, as police make sure hot-spots are covered.

Last month, we reported that the new system had started watching over the town following investment by the town council.Images from the high-definition cameras are being beamed back to Alnwick Police Station and recorded 24/7 to maximise public safety and to provide evidence as required.

At Alnwick Town Council’s meeting last Thursday, the town’s Neighbourhood Sergeant Sharon Wilmore-Greaves reported that time had been spent tweaking the views and angles of the cameras to ensure that they provided the best possible coverage.

She also told members that Arriva’s cameras at the bus station, installed last year in a bid to tackle disorder there, were being reviewed at the end of October and it is hoped that they can be linked into the town system then.

Sgt Wilmore-Greaves said that it would be desirable to install an additional camera on the street-facing side of the Arriva building so that the area around Pizza Royale and Chapel Lane is targeted.

She described this as one of the hot-spots for disorder in the town centre, with the other two – the area outside the Mailhouse, formerly Penny Black, and the Market Place – now covered by cameras.

On a positive note, Sgt Wilmore-Greaves said that some footage from the new cameras was being used to prosecute three offenders in relation to an incident outside the Market Tavern.
