Action taken to try to help traffic flow at A1 roadworks

As reported by the Gazette, traffic controls on the road – limiting it to one lane, near the Tritlington/Ulgham turn-off to the north of Morpeth – have been leading to long queues of traffic.

The work, to construct two new bus lay-bys, is set to take place until Wednesday, April 6. There will be traffic signals in operation north and southbound, 24 hours a day, with 40mph limits in place.

The job began at the start of last week and now, following motorists’ frustrations at the delays being caused, Highways England has stepped in to try to help the situation.

The authority has said that it has altered the timing of the temporary traffic lights to improve the flow of traffic. This means that the green light will be on for longer in each direction. Further action will take place when necessary.

A spokeswoman for Highways England said: “We are currently carrying out work to install two new bus lay-bys.

“This work is being undertaken 24 hours a day so it can be completed as soon as possible.

“We have altered the timings of the temporary traffic lights to improve the flow of traffic and will continue to monitor the traffic along the A1. We will take further action when necessary.”
