Northumberland motorists heading south should be aware that a section of the A1 southbound is currently closed following an incident.

The road between Bowes Inclines (at Eighton Lodge Roundabout) and the A1231 is closed to allow officers to carry out inquiries into a collision which happened earlier this morning.

Diversions are in place into Birtley and to Blind Lane where motorists can rejoin the A1. The road is expected to remain closed until lunchtime.

Additional officers are in the area to assist with traffic management and ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Northumbria Police said: “At 5am this morning police were informed a car had overturned on the A1 southbound, near the Angel of the North just before the turnoff for the A1231.

“Emergency Services attended and a 24-year-old man was taken to hospital in a critical condition. He was pronounced dead at hospital.

“Another man, aged 20, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Police are appealing for witnesses and asking any motorists on the A1 in the Dunston area earlier this morning to get in contact. It’s believed a taxi was on the A1 at the time and may have witnessed the collision, officers are keen for the driver and any passengers who may have seen what happened to contact them.
