The A1 in north Northumberland is open after an LPG tanker caught fire yesterday afternoon.

Police and fire crews were called to the seen south of Belford at around 1.53pm.

A 1,000-metre exclusion zone was put around the tanker and fire crews investigated it for explosions.

Appliances from Belford, Seahouses, Alnwick and Amble put out the fire while traffic was diverted north and southbound.

Specialist lifting equipment was used to recover the vehicle and the road was then checked for any damage before it reopened at 11pm last night.

A statement from Northumbria Police said: “We appreciate the co-operation and patience shown by motorists and the general public - this has been a difficult and protracted incident and understandably public safety has been paramount throughout.”
