A1 in Northumberland closed after ‘multi-vehicle’ crash

Part of the A1 in Northumberland has been closed in both directions following a serious crash today.

A section of both the northbound and southbound carriageway is shut at Newton on the Moor and local diversions are in place.

The collision, on the northbound junction near to Newton on the Moor, is believed to have involved several vehicles and was reported at 12.15pm.

It is expected that the closure could be for a number of hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area. HGVs are advised to use the A697.

Sgt Graham Vickers said: “Motorists are being advised that a section of the A1 northbound at Newton on the Moor is now closed due to a serious road traffic collision. The southbound lane will also be closed temporarily to assist in casualty evacuation.

“Northumberland County Council is overseeing the diversions. Motor patrols and Coquetdale police officers will be in the area to ensure traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.”

The ambulance and fire service are also attending the incident.
