The A1 southbound is closed between Shilbottle and Deanmoor, near Alnwick, following what police are describing as a ‘serious’ crash.

Sgt Graham Vickers, of Northumbria Police, said that the closure is expected to be in place for ‘at least three hours or more’. Local diversions are being put in place to take the traffic off at Alnwick and divert via Shilbottle/Hampeth.

An eyewitness told the Gazette that a digger was ‘like a fireball’ at the scene and a lorry windscreen had been smashed.

Sgt Vickers added that motorists are advised to avoid the area and Northumberland County Council will be informed to oversee the diversions.

Motorists should also be aware that the A1 has been closed in both directions north of Berwick due to high winds.
