Volunteers at Alnwick’s Bailiffgate Museum were recently able to gather some fascinating information from two of their visitors about an Alnwick man who served with the RAF in the Second World War.

Matthew Tarelli served as a fighter pilot in Egypt, India and Burma.

So proud was he of his Alnwick heritage that he persuaded his ground crew to paint the Percy Lion on the nose of his plane and a tribute to his fiancée Dorothy Fisher, pictured above.

Unfortunately, the ground crew didn’t have a picture of the Percy Lion to work from so they painted a Burmese lion instead.
