But a bracing walk on the Northumberland coast or a gentle stroll around one of its many pretty villages is a sure fire pick-me-up to wash away the winter blues.
Here are 15 of the best coastal spots in Northumberland to enjoy on a winter’s day.
13. Cheswick
Wild and windswept, Cheswick beach is the one that few visitors to Northumberland know about. You'll find it between Holy Island and Berwick off the road to Goswick golf course. There's also a good footpath linking up with Cocklawburn to the north. Photo: Jane Coltman
14. Holy Island
There's something special about visiting Holy Island during the off season. Grab a coffee and take a walk to Lindisfarne Castle and if it's a nice day trek on a little further to the lime kilns and beach and see the stone stacks that have been built. Photo: Ian Smith
15. Berwick-upon-Tweed
There are numerous winter walks to enjoy around Berwick but one of the best is a circuit of the town's historic ramparts. Guaranteed to blow the cobwebs away! Alternatively, take a stroll by the banks of the River Tweed or head to Spittal Promenade. Photo: Kimberley Powell
