But a bracing walk on the Northumberland coast or a gentle stroll around one of its many pretty villages is a sure fire pick-me-up to wash away the winter blues.
Here are 15 of the best coastal spots in Northumberland to enjoy on a winter’s day.
9. Embleton
Undoubtedly one of Northumberland's best beaches, Embleton Bay offers great dog walking territory and views to Dunstanburgh Castle with a fine links golf course too. Photo: Jane Coltman
10. Beadnell
Don't expect to see this many people at Beadnell on a winter's day but it is one of the more sheltered bays on the Northumberland coast with a glorious beach and historic lime kilns to explore. There are a couple of excellent pub restaurants in the centre of the village too, a short stroll away. Photo: Jane Coltman
11. Seahouses
Fish and chips, a go on the amusements and a wander by the pretty harbour make a winter trip to Seahouses worthwhile. There might even be a walrus calling by! Photo: Jane Coltman
12. Bamburgh
Wrap up warm and make the most of Bamburgh without the crowds - although you might be surprised how many still visit on a sunny winter's day. And there are a couple of cracking pubs for a spot of lunch or a drink too. Photo: Jane Coltman
