It seems like only yesterday when we were shuffling off the cold Alnwick streets and into Woolies to buy late Christmas pressies and a bagful of Pick ‘n’ Mix.
But the popular Woolworths store has now been shut almost six years, replaced at 40-42 Bondgate Within by M&Co.
Alnwick’s Woolworths, store number 822, opened on November 23, 1953.
Like many other national chains over the years, it was a late arrival in the town. Ashington had welcomed the retail giant some 30 years earlier.
But who can remember its original location?
As our second picture shows, it started its Alnwick life along the road a little in the block now housing Iceland and the Yorkshire Building Society. It was number 32 Bondgate Within.
Nearby was Broughs and beyond ‘Broughs Corner’ was the beautiful Louvre Cafe, which was pulled down to make way for a new, modern building into which Woolworth moved on February 1, 1968, a sign of its popularity back then.
Sadly, Woolies closed on December 30, 2009.
Former manager George Stokoe wrote to the Gazette after the store’s demise, stating: “All of us have warm memories of working in Woolworths in Alnwick.”
