News of D-Day, the 70th anniversary of which is today, took a while to filter back to north Northumberland in 1944.

The first mention comes in the June 16 edition of the Northumberland and Alnwick Gazette, referring to the first casualty of the invasion fromAlnwick.

The unlucky man was 20-year-old air gunner Sgt Charles William Lillico, of Greensfield Avenue, Alnwick.
