This Sunday (May 30), Moore House, Whalton, Morpeth, which is new to the scheme, is opening at 2pm. Next Sunday, it’s Lilburn Tower, near Wooler.
13. Wallington
Wallington is a country house and gardens about 12 miles west of Morpeth, near the village of Cambo. The estate was owned by the Fenwick family from 1475 until Sir John Fenwick, 3rd Baronet, had financial problems and sold his properties to the Blacketts, a wealthy Newcastle family of mine owners and shipping magnates, in 1688, after which it was almost entirely rebuilt. 15. Whalton Manor
Whalton Manor is a house in the village of the same name, near Morpeth. It is grade II listed and dates from the 17th century but was substantially altered by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1908, at the same time as he was working on Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. With the help of Gertrude Jekyll, Lutyens also designed the walled gardens, pavilion, tiled hexagonal summerhouse, stone pergola and paved courtyard. Photo: Supplied
