Breathing new life into a traditional pub isn’t always easy. At the Queens Head at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, the team have managed to do just that, creating a modern yet traditional look and offering a bright but cosy drinking and dining environment.

Newbiggin is becoming a cultural hotspot of the Northumberland coastline and the Queens Head, just 100 metres from the beach, is a new must-visit pub and dining experience.

Cask and craft ales

Offering a wide selection of cask and craft ales alongside a selection of quality wines, there are also plans to open an on-site microbrewery to offer even more choice in the future.

Homemade bread and sauces made on site

Providing fresh, home-cooked food is at the heart of the Queens Head’s ethos. Jordon, the head chef, has worked in award-winning restaurants and based his new menu on locally sourced, homemade dishes. Everything from his stocks and sauces to desserts and bread are made fresh, on site.

Company directors James and Kay Henry, who also run the Coquetvale Hotel in Rothbury and the Sun Inn at Alnmouth, explain: “These are the sorts of touches you would normally expect in a high-end, high-priced restaurant, but we want to offer the best quality dining experience in relaxed surroundings where you can also enjoy coming for a drink.

“Having run multiple sites across five decades, we know that having a good chef on board is essential to provide what our customers want.”

Bed & Breakfast and chic beer garden

More than a simply a restaurant and pub, the Queens Head also offers Bed & Breakfast with five refurbished rooms.

To make the most of that coastal setting, there is also a chic beer garden to enjoy your drink outdoors.

The Queens Head is the first site that James and Kay have refurbished and have carried out the makeover, since taking it over early last year. The historic pub dates back to the 1800s and had been rebuilt in 1909.

Before operating venues in Northumberland, the partners ran the busy and popular restaurant Luciano’s in a suburb of Newcastle. The restaurant received glowing reviews during the 14 years they ran it – and the couple aim to repeat their success at the Queens Head.
