Cragside in Northumberland ranked among UK's top picnic spots

Cragside has been named in a top 10 ranking of the UK’s favourite picnic spots.

The National Trust property, near Rothbury, features at number four in the list revealed by Leisure Range Cookers to mark National Picnic Week.

It used National Trust locations and analysed TripAdvisor ratings to find out which ones came out on top.

Vijay Bhardwaj, marketing director at Leisure Range Cookers, said: “When full coronavirus restrictions were placed, it meant that socialising was off the menu in the UK, but as restrictions are eased and we’re able to have small gatherings outside, a picnic is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. You must ensure you’re staying to the UK Government’s advice of social distancing.”

The number one outdoor picnic spot in the UK is Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim, with an average TripAdvisor rating of 4.5 and an overall score of 95.

Next on the list is Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal in North Yorkshire with an overall score of 67.

Third is Carrick-a-Red in County Antrim with an overall score of 66 followed by Cragside, the creation of Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, on 65. Its gardens, with the exception of the formal garden, reopened on Monday but visitors must book tickets online in advance.

Others in the top 10 are Bodnant Garden in Conwy, Lanhydrock in Cornwall, Glastonbury Tor in Somerset, Hardwick in Derbyshire, Stourhead in Wiltshire and Calke Abbey in Derbyshire.
