Mrs Lynne Harris was prevented by illness from giving her workshop on card making so at short notice other members stepped up to the mark to provide the entertainment.

Mrs Judith Hazelhurst tested the brain power with a Christmas quiz, before everyone present introduced themselves in a few words for the benefit of new member Mrs Rose Hill.

The spirit of Christmas was brought to the members with the serving of sherry, shortbread, mince pies and Christmas cake.

A poem written by the eight-year-old granddaughter of Martha, which was read by Lady Craft, gave delight to all.

Members then had to cover the up-to-date business of the institute.

The treasurer gave a satisfactory financial statement, while at the same time stressing the need for fund-raising to cover commitments in 2018, including our centenary celebrations.

An invitation to attend a day course on small harp tuition was received.

Events at Cresswell House included the first of the centenary events in June. Ideas for marking the centenary in the village are to be discussed.

December birthdays were Mrs Robson and Mrs Cockerill.

Arrangements were confirmed for the January meeting when Sir Alan Craft will speak on Medicine Through The Catflap.

Mrs Cockerill and Mrs Hopper agreed to act as joint programme secretaries.

Discussions then took place on the need to increase the membership following the development of 38 new houses in the village. Promotion and publicity for the institute will be reviewed.

The competition winners for an object ‘L’ were: 1 Lady Craft; 2 Mrs Hazelhurst; 3 Mrs Laidler.

At the end of the meeting the members left the Parish Rooms in happy mood, feeling that the Christmas season had really begun.
