A GIRLS’ grammar school for Alnwick to replace the existing 152-year-old Duchess’s School in Bailiffgate is foreshadowed in an announcement by Northumberland County Council warning local government electors and education authorities in the area of its intentions.

The proposed school, which will be sited in the town’s Ratten Row a few hundred yards west of the present school, forms part of the County Council’s £15million educational development plan for the county.

It will be a variant of the triparte system – separate grammar, technical and modern schools with an association of these schools on a campus where practicable – to meet local circumstances.

Notification of its proposed establishment has been submitted to the Ministry of Education for inclusion in the 1962-3 major buildings programme.
