Fair queens, ducking wenches and fancy dress … 40 reminders of Alnwick Fair
Alnwick Fair was the highlight of the social calendar in the Northumberland market town.
The annual costumed event was held this week every summer from 1969 to 2007, when it sadly bade farewell. Over the years, it drew in large crowds to watch the parades, the crowning of the fair queen, the ‘Militia’ ducking wenches in the Market Place, strongman competition and all manner of fun and games, recreating the medieval trading and agricultural fairs. Here are some reminders of those great times.
