NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is working together with practices in Northumberland to ensure that people have access to health care if they need it over the bank holiday weekend.

People are being reminded that there may be changes in how they access a GP but should get in touch with their practices in the normal way; via telephone or online.

Dr Robin Hudson, medical director at the CCG said: “We are keeping surgeries open as normal on VE day so that services are available to people who need urgent medical care at this difficult time.

“We understand people may be apprehensive about coming to us for fears they may be exposed to the virus. But we have robust infection control measures in place and no-one will be permitted into a surgery without first having a telephone or online consultation.”

The CCG is working to ensure that practices are closely connected across Northumberland and patients may need to travel to a different surgery should they require a face-to-face appointment.

This is to ensure they are seen by the most appropriate professional, in the right place and to be separated from those patients who have COVID-19 related symptoms.

Dr Hudson continued: “We know the sacrifices people are making and it is going to be difficult spending another bank holiday weekend in lockdown, but it’s so important we keep going – and even more important you contact us when you need us.”

Patients are being reminded that NHS 111 online is available for urgent medical advice including COVID-19 related queries and only to call NHS 111 if they are unable to use these online services.

Some pharmacies across Northumberland will also be open if patients need medication or advice, between 2pm and 5pm.
