People First Care Ltd has submitted a planning application seeking permission for a two-storey extension to provide eight new bedrooms at the Old Vicarage Residential Home.

A similar scheme was approved in 2016 along with plans for the construction of seven new homes for older people within its extensive grounds.

However, those permissions have expired and the applicant is only seeking to renew the consents for the Grade II-listed care home extension.

In a report accompanying the application, Adam Graham of Northpoint Architects, states: ‘The existing care home requires an extension to create additional bedrooms and communal spaces to ensure the long term viability and use of the building.

‘The proposed extension footprint is identical to the extension which received approval in 2016. The internal configuration and fenestration have been slightly amended to optimise the spaces provided to residents, however the overall character and scale are as previously approved.

‘The proposed areas will provide improved and more modern facilities for residents and staff.

‘The proposed extension will allow the care home to increase the number of residents, creating additional jobs for the local area. Residents will also have access to use the local facilities and shops in Wooler, contributing to the local economy and community.’An additional conservatory is also proposed to the rear to extend the existing dining area, as well as new laundry facilities. The care home currently has 17 bedrooms.
