Mr Johnson is discussing reopening the hospitality sector and loosening the two-metre social-distancing rule in England with his top Cabinet colleagues and scientists on Monday, with a formal announcement expected on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister will outline the plans to Parliament for pubs, restaurants, hotels, barbers and hairdressers to reopen in England from July 4, and a likely loosening of the social distance rule to aid the restart of the economy.

Social distancing guidelines are being asses with the view to reopening the hospitality industry in England.

While the ambition is to allow such businesses to reopen, some venues may not be considered safe to reopen at this point, due to difficulties in facilitating social distancing.

But the relaxing of social-distancing measures to one-metre would provide a significant boost to the hospitality sector by allowing many venues to open safely in part, such as pubs.

On Sunday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We’re clearly on track for that plan because the number of cases coming down and the plan does refer to hospitality and some of the other things that are closed that so many people want to see open.”

Mr Hancock suggested that the reopening of pubs could see new regulations introduced such as customers registering before they are allowed to visit.

The latest review of lockdown measures will take place this week with ‘phase three’ measures set to be put in place from July 4 at the earliest.
