North East's latest Covid-19 case rates updated in fresh figures

The latest information on new Covid-19 cases in England was released on Thursday, July 2 and combines both pillar one and pillar two data.

This means that the figures are based on both testing in laboratories and the wider community.

The newest data shows that Middlesborough and Hartlepool currently have the highest coronavirus case rates in the North East – for the week ending Sunday, June 28 – standing at 6.4 cases per 100,000 of the area population.

Middlesborough sits at 49th out of 145 local authorities. Hartlepool is 51st on the list.

Leicester, which was placed into a ‘local lockdown’ this week by the Government, comes first on the list.

The city’s most recent Covid-19 rate stands at 141.3 for the week ending June 28.

At the end of the previous week, Leicester’s rate was recorded as being 140.2.

Gateshead and South Tyneside currently have the lowest rates in the North East region, with 0.5 and 0.7 (140th and 138th in the list) respectively.
