Mouth of the Tyne Festival cancelled for 2021 as organisers cite 'growing uncertainty' around roadmap out of Covid
A North East festival has been cancelled for 2021 after its organisers said it could not be sure over the Government’s next move out of lockdown.
Mouth of the Tyne Festival, which had been due to run from Thursday, July 8, to Sunday, July 11, has now been rescheduled for Thursday, July 7, to Sunday, July 10, next year.
It comes after last year’s event also had to be postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Among the acts lined up for the Tynemouth Priory shows were Keane and the Lighthouse Family as headlines, with Cattle and Cane, Eliza Shaddad PP Arnold and Georgie also appearing as special guests.
The decision comes after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was too early to say if the remaining restrictions in place could be lifted on Monday, June 21, which has been earmarked as the next stage in the easing of the rules.
Earlier this week he said while he has said the vaccination programme is running well, a quarter of adults are yet to get their jab, while the daily case numbers have also seen a rise.
A statement from the organisers said: “Sadly, we have taken the very hard decision to postpone this year’s event due to the growing uncertainty around the next step of the government’s roadmap.
"The event will return bigger and better between 7 to 10 July 2022.
"Keane have already confirmed that they’ll be back on Friday, July 8, 2022, and existing tickets remain valid for that one.
"We’re hoping to confirm what’s happening with the other shows in the next week or so, thank you for your patience.
Anyone that can’t make the new dates is entitled to a refund.
"The festival’s ticketing partners will be in touch direct.
"We know this decision will be disappointing, but we’ve given the event every chance to go ahead.
"We now feel that it’s in the best interests of residents, visitors, suppliers, staff and artists to put safety and certainty first and make our annual get together a bigger celebration next year.
"We'll update on the other shows here as soon as possible.
“Thank you for your continued support and understanding – we really do appreciate it.”
