Coronavirus: Alnwick's Bailiffgate Museum closes - with Viking exhibition postponed until 2021

Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery in Alnwick has closed ‘for the foreseeable future’ due to the coronavirus outbreak.

As a result, its much anticipated exhibition about the Vikings in collaboration with Jorvik has been postponed until the summer of 2021.

However, virtual visitors can share in a wealth of fascinating historic content online.

Jean Humphrys, chair of trustees, said: “The whole country is facing a difficult time ahead and although Bailiffgate’s building has had to close, we will be working hard to provide new stories, photographs and items of interest online for our virtual community.”

The Bailiffgate Collections website is a digital archive of photographs, documents and images of objects and artworks. Recently uploaded is a striking collection of over 100 rare portrait photographs.

Bailiffgate TV YouTube channel also showcases films made of local people and archive footage over the last 70 years, while its Out of Town Museum celebrates the rural heritage of Coquetdale.
