Area breakdown of North-East coronavirus deaths as numbers soar over 10-day period

Following a surge of thousands of new confirmed Covid-19 cases across the region, there has been an increase in coronavirus-related deaths in the last 10 days.

Figures, released by NHS England, show the deaths of 24 people have been recorded between September 16 and September 25.

This is three times the amount of deaths reported in the region between the start of July and the end of August – with just seven deaths reported during the two-month period.

Since September 16, more than 4,000 people have tested positive for the virus as the North East has the second highest number of cases in the country.

Daily hospital admissions in England are at their highest since June, according to Government data.

There have been a total of 26 deaths in the North East so far in September but 24 of these were recorded after September 16.

The highest number of deaths have been recorded at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, which operates Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital.

There had be no deaths at the trust’s hospital since June 21 but in just five days (between September 16 and 21) nine people died after testing positive with the virus.

Across the whole of the North East there have been coronavirus related deaths every day since Sunday, September 13.

Number of deaths recorded in July and August: 2

Total number of deaths at the trust: 142

South Tees NHS Foundation Trust

Number of deaths recorded in the last 10 days: 4

Number of deaths recorded in July and August: 1

Total number of deaths at the trust: 259

Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Number of deaths recorded in the last 10 days: 4

Number of deaths recorded in July and August: 1

Total number of deaths at the trust: 121

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust

Number of deaths recorded in the last 10 days: 1

Number of deaths recorded in July and August: 1

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust
