The region will be place into the very high alert level on Wednesday, December 2, when the national lockdown ends.

Before the nationwide measures were put in place discussions were ongoing between the Government and local leaders about moving the region from Tier 2 to Tier 3.

So exactly what extra restrictions would that mean?

When do the restrictions start and how long will they last for?

The Tier 3 restrictions will be brought in on Wednesday, December 2, just after midnight.

The stricter tier system will be reviewed every two weeks the Government says with the first taking place on December 16.

Can I go to the eat out or visit the pub under Tier 3?

Hospitality settings - such as bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants – will remain closed. But they are permitted to continue sales by takeaway, click-and-collect, drive-through or delivery services.

Can I see my family and friends under Tier 3?

People must not meet anyone who does not live in their household – or is part of their support bubble – in any indoor venue and most outdoor venues including private gardens.

Groups of no more than six can meet up in some other outdoor public spaces including parks, beaches, and the publicly accessible countryside.

Can I go watch a football game?

There should be no public attendance at spectator sport or indoor performances and large business events should not be taking place. Elite sport events may continue to take place without spectators.

In Tiers 1 and 2 a limited number of spectators will be allowed into sporting grounds.

Can I go to school under Tier 3?

Schools, universities and places of worship will remain open but household mixing will be banned.

Can I get married under Tier 3?

Weddings and funerals will be able to go ahead after Lockdown 2 but with restrictions on numbers of attendees – 15 people at weddings and 30 people at funerals.

Wedding receptions will not be permitted.

Can I play sport under Tier 3?

Organised sport, physical activity and exercise classes can continue outdoors but will not be allowed indoors.

Everyone can travel to venues or amenities which are open but should aim to reduce the number of journeys.

People living in a very high level alert area should avoid staying overnight in another part of the UK other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities.

Will things change at Christmas?

Earlier this week the Government announced families will be able to meet up in “Christmas bubbles” over the festive period, following an agreement between the UK government and devolved administrations.

Up to three households will be able to meet up for five days between 23 and 27 December, although the leaders have warned people to be cautious, saying that it “cannot be a normal Christmas”.
