Two students at Duchess’s Community High School in Alnwick have been highly commended in an international poetry competition.

Dorit Greene, 18, and Holly Ellis, 13, both members of the Duchess’s High School Poetry Club, were highly commended in the Foyle Young Poets competition, organised by The Poetry Society.

The competition is the largest and most prestigious youth poetry competition in the world. Out of 17,000 poems sent into the competition from 113 countries across the world, Dorit and Holly were in the top 85.

Last week they travelled to London as part of their prize, and took part in a reading and poetry workshop day.

Catherine Newton, who runs the poetry club at the Duchess’s Community High School, is delighted with the girls’ achievements.

She said: “It’s amazing that not one but two Duchess’s High School students have been commended in the competition and I’m thrilled that their talent is being recognised.”
