Amble students explore Northumberland's links to the Antarctic
Amble students have been learning about local connections to Antarctic exploration.
Year 5 students at James Calvert Spence College had a visit from Clive Gray, chief executive of Blyth Tall Ships.
He spoke about Polar exploration, conditions in the Antarctic desert and the adventures of local explorer, William Smith.
William Smith was born in Seaton Sluice and discovered Antarctica in 1819 while sailing on 'The Williams' a vessel built in Blyth.
The visit helped with the pupils’ study of Shackleton and the frozen kingdom.
