Rachael Tait, secretary of the Glendale Agricultural Society, said: “As this national crisis escalates with the deteriorating situation surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19), the board of trustees have taken another sad but sensible decision.

It follows the recent cancellation of its award-winning Children’s Countryside Day, also held on the Wooler showfield, which attracted over 1,650 children last June.

Rachael said: “We take our public health responsibilities very seriously and with the Government advice surrounding mass gatherings, social distancing, self-isolation and unnecessary travel, the Society felt there was no other option.

“Whilst this news is disappointing for everyone, we are sure that you would agree that the health, safety and well-being of our, traders, competitors, members, sponsors, volunteers, visitors and local community is of paramount importance.

“We will be contacting all traders, members, sponsors, volunteers and judges over the next few days; we will work through this together.

“We wish you all the very best in these unprecedented times. Stay safe.”

Last year’s event, the 127th show, was a big success with thousands of spectators enjoying a a taste of rural life, as well as seeing some of the finest livestock, ponies and horses that the region has to offer.

Across the showfield there was an abundance of attractions, exhibitions and local producers, with record entries received for the cattle section.

Highlights in the main ring included the FMX Freestyle Motocross Acrobatics Display, a Tug O’ War and a Sumo suit relay race.

The Glendale Agricultural Society is one of the smallest agricultural societies in the whole of the United Kingdom with around 300 members.
