On 26th June at 6.30pm in Ovington Social Club (NE42 6DH) a new arboretum is being launched. All are welcome to attend. Talks will be given by Woodland Trust and Northumberland County Council about their support for the community project

In 1998 Ovington Parish Council engaged an independant survey by an ecologist to record free standing trees in the parish. The results, a year later, highlighted 60% of free standing trees were Ash and the majority suffered from Ash Dieback disease. The ecologist recommended urgent action to increase tree stock and diversity of trees. The parish council appointed a project manager who created a five year plan of tree planting. The plan involved liaising with 11 different landowners, engaging over 100 volunteers and gaining support of Northumberland County Council, The Woodland Trust, and Tyne Rivers Trust.

A host of different events commenced in 2020. Family activities such as a tree treasure hunt helped with local engagement. Experts from different fields provided input on planting and locations. Trees were selected from the Royal Horticultural Society list of true native species. So far nearly 4000 trees have been planted. The end rusult is a linear native tree arboretum walk. This follows a route of the majority of tree planting.
