And what is the first thing you crave when the temperatures soar – who said ice-cream?
They might be specialist ice-cream parlours, diversifying fish & chip shops or cafes. And there's a couple that we think should appear in the list. How many will you get round to trying over the coming months?
1. Spurreli, Amble
One reviewer wrote: “Excellent ice cream, my only regret was not enough time to try every flavour!” Another said: "Just had a fantastic ice cream from here, lots of choice and even had gluten free cones which I’ve never had before in a cafe - very impressed." TripAdvisor rating: 4.5/5. Photo: Paul Larkin
2. Doddington's Milk Bar, Wooler
"Can never drive or walk past this Milk Bar without buying an ice cream, so many flavours it’s difficult to choose," was the verdict of a recent reviewer of Doddington's Milk Bar in Wooler. TripAdvisor rating: 4.5/5 Photo: Paul Larkin
3. Morwick Dairy Ice Cream, Warkworth
A recent review said: "Stopped off for ice creams and were pleasantly surprised at how well they have set up for Covid etc. Staff were happy and smiling. Ice creams were huge but tasted brilliant, possibly the nicest ice cream that I have ever had." TripAdvisor rating: 4.5/5 Photo: Jane Coltman
4. Carlo's, Alnwick
Carlo’s fish and chip shop, run by Andy Watt and Adam Alexander, opened a gelateria within its Market Street premises in March 2020 using the traditional methods an Italian ancestor once used. A recent reviewer wrote: "The take away half litres of gelato are out of this world. We had the pistachio and raspberry ripple and they were insanely good. Wish we lived nearer. Although I would be much fatter!" TripAdvisor rating: 4.5/5. Photo: Paul Larkin
