The Government has introduced the Broadband Upgrade Fund to provide grant support towards faster broadband – but the support of residents and businesses is essential to winning it.

Tim Kirton, Alnwick Town Council projects and funding officer, said: “Being a rural area broadband speeds in parts of Alnwick can be much slower than elsewhere which has a very detrimental effect not only for residents who may have trouble for example downloading information, streaming TV programmes and films, but also for businesses who could do more business and operate much more easily and profitably with faster broadband speeds.

"New businesses could also be established far more easily with gigabit-capable broadband.

“This grant is a real opportunity for us to secure faster broadband speeds in Alnwick – but we can’t win it without the active help of our residents and businesses.

"We need as many individual people and small and medium sized businesses in Alnwick to sign-up an interest in this by the deadline date of September 30.

“It is very easy and absolutely free to register your interest; go to the Broadband Upgrade Fund at https://broadband-upgrade-fund.campaign.gov.uk/ and complete the online form and submit this.

“The town council is acting as community co-ordinator so we will do the rest of the work for you.

“We need to get as many individual people and small and medium sized Alnwick businesses to register their interest as possible so that we can achieve the critical mass needed to attract broadband suppliers.

"So not only do we want individuals and businesses to sign up themselves, we also want you to tell your neighbours and friends about the fund to encourage them to also sign-up.”

Each resident can have funding worth up to £1,500 and each small and medium-sized business can have funding worth up to £3,500.

The funding goes towards supporting the cost of installing brand new gigabit-capable connections.
