Potential tenants offered rent-free year at Northumberland gastropub The Plough
Tenants are being offered a rent-free first year as an incentive to take over the running of a Northumberland gastropub and restaurant.
The Plough on the Hill at West Allerdean, near Berwick, closed last April and was put on the market in the autumn – just two years after it underwent a £1.3million transformation.
Husband-and-wife owners Robert Kingsley and Sarah Carmichael initially sought £50,000 for the leasehold interest and £900,000 for the freehold.
However, they are now offering a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ to the right applicant to take on their dream.Robert said: “If you have the drive, passion and experience to run and possibly own one of the finest gastropubs in the north of England then please get in touch. We had our restaurant up for rent at a price of £50,000 per annum. We have now decided to reduce this to a nil rent for year one.”
The rent in year two would be £10,000 and £20,000 in years three and four. The tenant/s would then have a first refusal offer to buy or extend the rental period.
“We have been inundated with potential leaders and we have many meetings arranged,” revealed Robert. “However, we are not in a hurry we want to ensure we get the right people that will look after what was our dream.
“Sarah and I will look at all propositions over the next three or four weeks and we are positive that we can find suitable people to make the restaurant very special once again.”
The couple opened the venue to great fanfare in September 2017 with MasterChef: The Professionals winner Gary Maclean at the helm in the kitchen.
Special features included hand-crafted tables and benches made from 140-year-old oak railway sleepers and a stunning marble bar within the lounge/bar area.
A split-level restaurant also features a stage for live music, while a south facing terrace provides stunning views towards the Cheviots. There is also a car park and play area.
In addition, there is a park comprising five, luxury static lodges which are run separately.
There are also development plans in place for eight luxury apartments.
