An application has been submitted by owner Toni Berlino to create a two-bedroom ground floor flat in the West Street property.

The space was last occupied by The Grill on the Hill, which closed in 2018.

A report on the applicant’s behalf states: ‘The client has tried numerous times over the past number of years to rent out the restaurant, bar and function room since he stopped using it himself due to lack of interest back in 2011.

‘The only time the property was successfully rented out was between 2016 and 2018 with the occupier only utilising the bar and restaurant as the function room was not worth the investment. Unfortunately, that business went bankrupt around two years ago.’

Mr Berlino has already been granted planning permission to convert the first floor function room into a two-bedroom flat.

The proposed ground floor flat will accommodate the restaurant area only, leaving the bar area by blocking up the internal doorway.

The report adds: ‘The proposal makes an efficient use of the redundant and antiquated ground floor restaurant area with minimum impact on adjoining occupiers and businesses.

‘With the overall floor area of the existing commercial property being vastly reduced by the whole first floor being converted into an two bedroom flat under the recent planning approval and along with this proposed planning application for the restaurant area our client feels he has a greater chance of renting out the remaining smaller bar area in the future.’
