New homes and businesses are being built along with new community facilities such as a hospital and leisure centre while repairs are ensuring historic monuments are preserved for many years to come.

5. Amble harbour
The new harbour office building on Amble quayside is nearing completion. This will provide four new lettable units and a community room with fantastic views of the River Coquet and harbour and also free up an historic building to let. Photo: supplied
The steel framework going up as the new Northumberland Estates sawmill on the Lionheart Industrial Estate in Alnwick close to the Highways England depot with the construction process managed by local contractors Glendale Engineering. Once complete the site will contain a 1,7009 sq m industrial shed open air silo and hard standing for timber storage. By investing in both a new building and equipment Northumberland Estates hopes to better utilise the wide variety and volume of home grown and sustainably produced timber from the Estate. Future plans also include the installation of a chipper line to produce a renewable woodchip fuel supply for use in the Estates biomass system and for sale as well as increasing the product line of items made from this locally produced timber. Work to enable the demolition of vacant parts of the current Berwick hospital is underway and will enable the construction of the new development on the northern end of the site to begin in the summer. Construction has begun by local developer Bondgate Homes on a new residential development called ‘The Kilns’ in the coastal village of Beadnell. With ground works now underway the site is already attracting a strong level of interest. It is unusual in that the scheme aims to help revitalise the local rural community which has been experiencing the effects of rising second home ownership by offering the new homes as primary residence only. The development will include 45 new-build houses in a mix of styles of which nine will be affordable housing reserved for local residents. Some of the houses will be dormer bungalow designed to appeal to the elderly or those looking to downsize. Photo: supplied
