One garage – Shell in Ashington – has caused outrage among local residents after putting its prices up to 175.9p per litre for unleaded petrol and 193.9p per litre for diesel – an increase of 14p in less than a week for diesel.
At nearby Asda, the price of unleaded petrol is more than 20p a litre cheaper while diesel is 34p a litre cheaper.
Figures from data firm Experian Catalist show the average cost of a litre of unleaded at UK petrol stations on Sunday was 155.62p.
Only a year ago the price per litre of unleaded and diesel was 124.32p and 127.25p respectively. The cost of filling up a typical 55-litre family car with either fuel has become more than £17 more expensive over that period.
