Indian restaurant in Northumberland receives Covid Curry Hero accolade for pandemic efforts

An Indian restaurant in Northumberland has been recognised for its role supporting the local community during the Covid pandemic.

The popular Magna Tandoori in Berwick has been named a Covid Curry Hero by trade magazine Curry Life.

The Bridge Street venue has been offering special discounts to vulnerable people, NHS staff and care workers in recent months.

Owner Oliul Khan has even used his own savings to support those in need.

He said: "Our NHS and social care sector have worked tirelessly this year to provide support to the many people who need it across the UK, often in exceptionally difficult circumstances and they are still doing a great job for the community.

"During this pandemic we were delighted to support our NHS and care workers and vulnerable people in our community. It is important that at the very core of our humanity we care for one another during difficult time."

Curry Life wanted to give recognition to Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants which provided vital community support at a time when their own businesses were facing an economic threat and decided to present them with a limited edition plaque.

Magazine editor in chief, Syed Nahas Pasha, said: “Despite the unprecedented problems posed by the present pandemic, these curry houses have gone out of their way to be almost a fourth emergency service to vulnerable people.

“Their businesses and livelihoods have been severely impacted, but this has not stopped them offering a helping hand to the most needy in our society at a time of crisis.”

He added: “During Covid-19, many Curry Houses have just managed to keep their heads above the water – absorbing the costs of closures, reduced capacity and Covid-19 compliance – many often putting their own lives at risk, as they themselves come largely from vulnerable BAME communities.

“Their efforts really deserve to be recognised as truly heroic-and we are delighted to be able to mark their magnificent contributions in this way.”

Over the years, the Khan family have won many awards for their authentic Indian cuisine. All food is prepared in traditional style, cooked in a charcoal Tandoori clay oven.
