Debenhams confirms closure of Metrocentre store - but this is when Sunderland's will reopen

However, the department store has confirmed its shop in The Bridges in Sunderland will be trading once again from Wednesday, June 17, bringing good news for shoppers on Wearside.
A reopening date is yet to be confirmed for its shop in Eldon Square in Newcastle.

Hide AdThe Metrocentre is run by Intu, which itself is facing difficulties, having warned it risks defaulting on its debt unless lenders give it space to resolve its issues.
In a statement released today, Tuesday, June 9, Debenhams said of its decision over the future of the Metrocentre store: “Sadly we have been unable to agree terms with the landlord and as a result this store will not be re-opening in line with the rest of the chain next week.
“We greatly regret the effect on our colleagues, who have served our customers with commitment and dedication.

Hide Ad“Our customers can continue to shop with us online at www.debenhams.com or at other local stores from next week.”
It came as the company also confirmed it would also not reopen branches in Milton Keynes and Watford as a result of the same talks with landlord Intu.
Debenhams has said it will reopen 120 stores, having entered the lockdown with a total of 142, after agreeing to terms with landlords.
It will reopen the first 50 branches on Monday, June 15.
A spokesman added: "We greatly regret the effect on our colleagues, who have served our customers with commitment and dedication."

Hide AdIts other North East store, in the Hillstreet Shopping Centre in Middlesbrough, will also reopen on Wednesday, June 17.
The company’s online store continues to trade.
