Alnwick retail leader 'overwhelmed' by public response to reopening

Alnwick shopkeepers have been thrilled by the public’s response to their return in recent days.

Shoppers have steadily returned to the town centre since the reopening of non-essential shops on June 15.

Fine weather has also helped, notably on Saturday when shoppers enjoyed strolling the streets and taking in the new-look market.

Lisa Aynsley, chairman of Alnwick Chamber of Trade, said: “The first week back has been a positive one, and we're expecting it to continue as more of the national brands reopen.

“I was overwhelmed at just how many of our local supporters came out last Monday – exactly the confidence boost we all needed.”

With pubs, restaurants and cafes now getting the all clear to reopen from July 4, she hopes it will provide a further boost to local business.

Social distancing guidelines remain in force, both inside shops and in all outside areas.
