The first market under new operator Geraud (UK) will take place on Thursday, June 11 in the Market Square with social distancing and a one-way customer flow system in operation.

Geraud (UK) was appointed to take over the running of the markets by Northumberland Estates in March only for lockdown to prevent any events from being held.

As of this week they are planning for markets to commence weekly on a Thursday and Saturday, plus monthly on the last Friday of the month. The Friday market will be a Farmer’s and Craft Market.

James Ormsby, who will be running the Alnwick markets on behalf of Geraud (UK), says there has been a great response from traders to the news with around 12 stalls booked for Thursday.

This Saturday’s market is already at full capacity with 20 stalls booked - the new self-distancing rules result in a reduced number of pitches.

“We are delighted to finally be able to re-open the Alnwick market,” said James.

“We will be implementing a cordoned off shopping space, with a controlled one way system to minimise any risk and keep shoppers and traders safe.

“We will have hand sanitiser and social distancing markings in place for everyone’s safety.

“Everyone has been very supportive and traders seem keen to get back to work, with many regulars looking forward to returning to their pitches.”

Mayor Lynda Wearn, who is scheduled to attend Saturday’s market, added: “I am delighted that the market is re-opening and wish the new operators every success.

“Since December the town has missed having its market and we, as a town council, are working with Geraud (UK) not only in supporting the market, but to be able to hold more events in the marketplace both as part of the market and separately.

“This is a very exciting time which promises to enhance the town centre experience for both residents and visitors alike.”

Geraud (UK) also operates Stratford market in London, Forge market in Glasgow and Keswick market.

Previous operator Local Living stepped away from running the Alnwick market at the end of 2019.
