While most supermarkets and shops will be opening their doors for shoppers wanting to restock on groceries after Christmas or bag a bargain in the sales, all branches of Aldi and discount store Home Bargains will be shut.

Aldi has closed on Boxing Day for several years now. And it will be the second year that Home Bargains has shut on the festive bank holiday.

The move has been broadly welcomed by customers of both retailers on social media.

One Home Bargains shopper said on Twitter: “Good on them I say. Yeah you could say Boxing Day is ‘just another day’ but stops you enjoying Christmas night.”

Another customer tweeted: “Nice to see Home Bargains taking the lead and closing their stores on Boxing Day to give their staff time off. Well done to them for thinking of their staff.”

One Twitter user commented: “Can’t believe Aldi staff have Xmas day and Boxing Day off @AldiUK #TopEmployers #Amazing #CantThankYouEnough.”
