Something Wicked this way comes, or is that just the smog of hairspray that will descend on two of the region’s venues next week?

Two West End musicals will hit Tyne and Wear which will see the theatres light up with fun and action and song.

Newcastle’s Theatre Royal will premiere the UK tour of The Bodyguard the Musical, based on the Hollywood blockbuster as of Wednesday, April 1.

Meanwhile the Sunderland Empire will stage Stephen Schwartz’s musical phenomenon Wicked on Tuesday, March 31, until Saturday, April 25.

The Bodyguard opened to rave reviews at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End in December 2012, with singer Beverley Knight starring in the main role.

It continued to play to standing ovations and packed houses for two years. And in 2014 X Factor winner, Alexandra Burke, took over in the role.

Alexandra, who won the fifth series of The X Factor, will be taking the lead role once more for the UK tour.

Further south than the Tyne is a show flying into the Empire which has been enjoying a run on the West End since 2006 and currently stars Alnwick lad Daniel Hope in the London version of the show.

The limited four-week engagement runs until April 25. With almost 50,000 tickets already sold for the run, prices start at just £15 with best availability for midweek matinees.
