Alnwick’s amateur thespians are making their final preparations ahead of the first performance of their annual pantomime tomorrow night.

Following on from last January’s performance of Sleeping Beauty, Alnwick Theatre Club is set to perform another traditional tale this time round when it takes on Pinocchio.

There will be seven chances from January 16 to January 24 to see the show, which this year has been written and will be directed by Sophie Towers.

She said: “In terms of actors, both Jimmy Dodds and Peter Lewis (my dad) have returned, and are also co-producing, as the dame Barbina Pasta and her son Jimmy Cricket respectively.

“Helen Gee has taken on the principal role of Pinocchio, who needs to prove his worth in order to get his girl, Penne Pasta, played beautifully by Lisa Gladstone.

“However, he needs to contend with the dastardly Stromboli (Trevor Hughes) before he can finally be ‘a real boy’.

“The script itself is primarily based on the original story by Carlo Collodi, but has a few elements from the Disney version.

“We started coming up with ideas in January and built the script around the typical panto structure – boy meets girl, things go wrong, tries to make amends and finally gets his girl.”

Performances take place on Friday, January 16 (7.30pm); Saturday, January 17 (2pm and 7.30pm); Wednesday, January 21 (7.30pm); Thursday, January 22 (7.30pm); Friday, January 23 (7.30pm); and Saturday, January 24 (2pm and 7.30pm).

Tickets for this year’s show – £9, £10 premier or £6 child/student – are available from the Playhouse box office in person, on 01665 510785 or www.alnwickplayhouse.co.uk
