A tough act to follow

The summer season for the talented youngsters of north Northumberland continues next month as a famous musical comes to the stage.

The senior group of Alnwick Playhouse Youth Theatre will be performing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats at the venue on three nights in July.

This renowned show brings the poems of TS Elliot to life and is full of famous songs and amazing dance routines.

The action revolves around the lives of cats at a rubbish dump which ends up becoming their meeting place.

They spend their days in anticipation waiting for the Jellicle Ball, where one cat gets selected by the Jellicle leader to be allotted an extra life.

Kirsty Hensleigh, from the group, explains a little more about the performances.

“The Youth Theatre has taken a whole new approach to this production, bringing together a creative team from members – past and present,” she said.

“A very busy production team is in full swing with publicity, costume design and make-up to build up a show that will be like no other ever seen at the Playhouse

“The group is delighted to be one of the first youth theatre companies in the North East to perform this show since its release to amateur youth groups last year.

“The team behind the show, Cheryl Stewart, Peter Brown and Judy Tribe, have all been waiting an extremely long time to put on this show so are understandably very excited about it all.

“Cheryl has put together some mind-blowing choreography, but the dance troupe has risen to the challenge.

“The costumes, created by the production team, transform each cast member into an individual cat.

“From start to finish, this is a very energetic and visually-stunning performance, which has a story line that will hold your attention for the whole performance.

“The production team have also been hard at work creating posters for each village around Northumberland, so keep your eyes peeled for one near you.”

The performances take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 9, 10 and 11, at the Playhouse.

Tickets cost £8, £7 concessions or £6 child/student. See www.alnwickplayhouse.co.uk for more details.
