A rollercoaster journey through actor, singer and pioneer civil rights activist Paul Robeson’s remarkable life is coming to Alnwick at the end of the month.
In Call Mr Robeson: A life, with songs, Tayo Aluko revives one of the 20th-century’s most impressive but overlooked figures in this powerful, compelling tour-de-force performance, which was seen at New York’s Carnegie Hall in February last year.
When over the years Paul Robeson gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel.
The performance is at Alnwick Playhouse on Friday, March 29 at 7.30pm. Tickets £10.50, £11.50 premier, £8.50 child/student.
