The folk music world descends upon Alnwick

MUSIC and dance from around the world returns to north Northumberland as the Alnwick International Music Festival begins on Saturday.

The eight-day showcase runs until Saturday, August 6, and global groups performing at this year’s event come from India, Togo, France, Russia, Romania, Poland and Estonia.

They will be complemented by talent from closer to home, with local performers from Northumberland, the North East and Scotland.

The main stage will be located in Alnwick Market Place and it will host performances every day of the festival, from 11am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm – although this may be subject to change.

Daily performances will also take place at Alnwick Castle (11.30am) and The Alnwick Garden (2pm) – although normal entry tickets to these attractions apply.

Festival fans will be treated to an extra dose of song and dance in special night-time shows, from Tuesday, August 2, to Saturday, August 6, in the Alnwick Playhouse (see Playhouse listings, left).

The annual Flower Festival kicks-off on Thursday, August 4, and runs until Sunday, August 7, in the town’s St Michael’s Church, Bailiffgate (see Events listings, below).

Children’s workshops will be held in the Town Hall from Monday, August 1, to Friday, August 5.
