The summer concerts in the Pastures at Alnwick Castle are back this year with a vengeance.

After the huge success of previous concerts starring Jools Holland, Status Quo, 10cc and Jessie J among others, a double bill has been announced for August

The Scottish rock band Simple Minds will perform on Saturday, August 16, followed by a rousing, patriotic concert, complete with Spitfire flypast, is planned for the following night.

It comes after no concert was held last year for the first time since the series started in 2006.

Alnwick Castle decided to make 2013 a fallow year to allow the Pastures to recover after the large number of fans attended both the Jessie J concert and Olympic Torch event.

But the promoter KAL Music has announced a double date over the middle August weekend and the Gazette is once again the media partner.

Simple Minds, fronted by vocalist Jim Kerr and formed in 1977, headlines on the Saturday evening.

The group has had a string of Top 20 UK singles, including Don’t You (Forget About Me), which reached Number One in the US charts.

With more than 35 years of performing behind them, as well as three Number One successes on the UK album chart, Simple Minds continue to tour regularly.

Promoter Keith Louch, of KAL Music, said: “They are a superb live band and we are excited that they have agreed to perform at Alnwick.”

The following evening, the music turns more orchestral as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will present The Alnwick Family Proms Concert – a programme full of popular classical pieces, film scores and culminating in the traditional Proms flag-waving finale.

The Sunday family concert will also commence with an aerobatic display by an original Second World War Spitfire as the orchestra plays stirring pieces associated with this magnificent aircraft.

Both concerts will have the customary fireworks finale.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow via the KAL Music website as well as at Alnwick Playhouse, Berwick Maltings Theatre and in the Alnwick Castle and Garden main entrances. Prices are detailed below.

Gates will open at 5pm and picnics are encouraged; there will also be refreshment stalls and bars available on site.
