Alnwick Music Society presents Michael Collins, Alnwick Castle Guest Hall, Saturday, February 18, 7.30pm. Tickets £14, £13 conc, available from Alnwick Playhouse (01665 510785) or on the door on the night.

THE second half of Alnwick Music Society’s concert season kicks-off with an appearance from the UK’s premier clarinettist, Michael Collins.

Since winning the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year woodwind section as a 16-year-old, he has gone on to become the outstanding performer of his generation with a series of recitals as a soloist, as well as with all the leading orchestras of the world.

As a 22-year-old Collins made his debut at the New York Carnegie Hall.

He is renowned for his dazzling virtuosity and sensitive musicianship and has been invited to play at the BBC Promenade Concerts, including the Last Night, more frequently than any other woodwind player and as a chamber musician he has established a long-standing relationship with the Wigmore Hall.

Collins will be joined in Alnwick by the Belfast-born pianist Michael McHale.

Following Cambridge, McHale trained at the Royal Academy of Music and performed as both a solo and concert recitalist as well as a chamber musician.

He has broadcast on radio and television and played across the world.

His debut as a solo recitalist at the Wigmore Hall was greeted with great acclaim and he has gone on to perform with the Halle and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

In 2009, he won first prize and the audience prize at the Terence Judd/Halle award finals.

The duo’s Alnwick programme will begin with two clarinet sonatas, Saint-Saens Op. 167 and Brahms in Eb major Op.120, followed by some Lutoslawski Dance Preludes.

After the interval, there will be the Poulenc Sonata for Clarinet and Piano followed by Weber’s Grand Duo Concertante Concertante in E flat Op4.

In keeping with the Society’s policy to attract young people to classical music concerts, all students in full-time education are admitted free of charge.

Both Society members and non-members are welcome.
