Buskers’ nights have been launched at two north Northumberland pubs, providing a stage for musicians of all styles and experiences.

Experienced musician Lee Brown has started weekly sessions on Thursday evenings at The Black Swan, on Narrowgate, from 9pm to midnight.

Meanwhile, the Craster Arms, in Beadnell, is running events on the second Tuesday of each month, starting next week, from 8pm.

The buskers’ nights at The Black Swan have been going for a few weeks and are going well.

Lee said: “We are into our fifth week and things are gathering pace. We welcome any singers or bands who want to get up and show us what they’ve got – no professional experience necessary.

“If you fancy performing just one, or a collection of covers or originals, this is the place to be.”

Lee himself has performed in all sorts of venues, from pubs and clubs to corporate events, weddings, cruise ships and theatres, both as a musician and a band leader. He believes buskers’ nights offer a great platform for performers and can uncover raw talent.

He said: “At a buskers’ night you can hear performers from practically every genre of music playing cover songs by established artists and if you are really lucky, original music written by local songwriters.

“The sessions always create a friendly, supportive atmosphere for all of the players to perform. Everyone gets their chance and everyone is appreciated no matter if they are an experienced pro or if it is their first time in front of an audience.

“The stage is open to all performers. We get some very experienced players who just love buskers’ nights and professional singers who want to try new material on a real audience. Even bands can turn up and strut their stuff.

“If you are just starting out you will always be encouraged. For a beginner there is no better way to start performing.”

The sessions at The Black Swan are free and players and listeners are welcome.

A PA system, lights, acoustic and bass guitar, cajoon and tambourine are all provided, or you can bring your own. There are also spare channels on the mixing desk. Search The Black Swan Buskers Night on Facebook for details.
