REVIEW: The Happy Cats , Breamish Hall , Powburn, Saturday

Breamish Hall at Powburn was the venue for a fantastic musical evening last Saturday, attended by a capacity crowd.

It was organised by David and Julia Smailes in support of both the village hall and the Great North Air Ambulance.

Music was provided by The Happy Cats, led by ex- Lindisfarne musician and multi-instrumentalist Marty Craggs on lead vocals, saxophone, flute, whistle and bohdran, with Les Dodd on guitar and Leonard Brown on accordian, talented musicians in their own right, who also supported harmony vocals.

The Happy Cats, who have a cult following on Tyneside, sang their way through a great selection of songs and tunes, from ballads to rock, folk and celtic, including songs by Elvis, Springsteen, Richard Thompson, Tom Waits and The Saw Doctors.

With much audience participation even to the extent of dancing in the aisles, the band’s encore as people were leaving was very aptly the Lindisfarne classic song Running for Home.

As Marty noted, this is what village halls were meant for – people having a good time! Long may it continue.
